Welcome to the monthly market update on You and Your Money.  Empowering you to reach your goals with tips and insights to help you  Plan Well, Invest Well and Live Well. I'm Jim Zahansky, principal / managing partner and chief goad strategist at Weiss, Hale and Zahansky Strategic Wealth Advisors. And here is this month's market update. (whooshing sound) Give us the latest news from the financial markets. What's going on? Good to start to talk about this, it's actually Fed day, so the Federal Reserve has been meeting yesterday. And today they'll come out with what the potential interest rate changes might be and of course, the much awaited press conference from Chairman Powell. So I mean, essentially why this day is important, it's become really important over the past year. I mean, all of us sort of are looking at what the Federal Reserve doing and that's monetary policy in the United States and sort of guiding developed nations across the world. What's happening with monetary policy? All of the things that happened in 2022 that made it a terrible market for equities, for stocks, for bonds, one of the worst years since 2008. And all of those sort of things are being looked at. Interest rates driving inflation down. That's really what the Fed has been doing. So in 2023, we expect the Fed to moderate  those interest rate increases slightly. And so we're cautiously optimistic for markets. So in January, when you look back so far, it's been a really strong start to the Nasdaq, to the S and P 500. Those are the equities indices that we're watching. It's also been a strong start to the bond markets as the US bond aggregate is positive year to date. But we're cautiously optimistic because these interest rates, really as inflation looks to be cooled, that specifically as prices everyone's paying everywhere from the grocery store to gas pumps for everything they're buying. We really need those to be tamed and interest rate is the tool to do it. So we're cautiously optimistic for markets, but in the end,   interest rates and inflation will drive how markets do this year. Absolutely. Well said. And a good wrap up summation of where we're at right now anyway in the ever changing market. (whooshing sound) As always, thanks for listening to You and Your Money.
